Reaction sequence during CO and O2 adsorption on RuO2(110) identified by scanning tunneling microscopy — •Sang Hoon Kim, J. Wintterlin, and G. Ertl — Fritz-Haber-Institut der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, Faradayweg 4-6, 14195 Berlin

Recently, it is found that RuO2(110) oxide layer grown on Ru(0001) [1]. Since then, the CO oxidation on the RuO2(110) on Ru(0001) has been investigated intensively. In particular, it was found spectroscopically that the reaction occurs already at room temperature[2].

We investigated this reaction at room temperature with scaning tunneling microscopy (STM). Reaction sequence during CO adsorption and O2 adsorption on RuO2(110) is identified directly and microscopically. In particular, stable existence of CO molecules on the one fold undercoordinated Ru (1f-cus Ru) atoms on the oxide surface at room temperature is discovered and investigated in detail. From these studies, we verify the established models based on mostly macroscopic methods about CO adsorption, O2 adsorption, and the reaction between them on the oxide surface. Furthermore, unclear or unknown features in those models are investigated microscopically, too.
