Investigation of organic thin films: PTCDA on Cu(111) — •Thorsten Wagner, Amin Bannani, Christian Bobisch, and Rolf Möller — Universität Essen, Fachbereich Physik, Institut für experimentelle Physik, 45117 Essen

3,4,9,10-perylene-tetracarboxylic-dianhydrid (PTCDA) is a well known organic semiconductor which is used for OLEDs and other optoelectronic devices. The initial growth of PTCDA on a metallic substrate - namely Cu(111) - had been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Thin films with coverages up to two monolayers have been prepared by the means of organic molecular beam epitaxy (OMBE) in UHV. Immediately after deposition the second layer was found to form several structures. During several days and without any further thermal treatment one phase became dominant. Surprisingly this was not the so called herringbone structure which is characteristic for the monolayer and the bulk (including thick films with coverage of five and more monolayers), but a No-dqrod-phaseNo-dq with an unit cell of 14Å × 13.5Å and an angle of γ = 28 .
