By Ag adsorption, vicinal Cu(335) undergoes a faceting transition similar to the recently reported Ag/Cu(223) system [1], exhibiting a periodic array of Ag covered (112) oriented facets and bare Cu stripes. By tuning the Ag coverage, the Ag/Cu stripe width and hence the periodicity of the array can be controlled.

We use angle resolved photoemission and synchrotron radiation to study the electronic structure of the faceted system. The spectra are dominated by surface states from Cu stepped stripes, which display umklapp bands from the local step array. The split of the umklapp features in the Fermi surfaces reduces as the Ag coverage is increased, consistent with a change in local slope of the corresponding bare Cu stripes. Above a coverage of 0.6 ML, the Cu surface state becomes quasi one-dimensional due to confinement in the direction perpendicular to the step array.
