Resonant scattering combines scattering and spectroscopy in order to probe the electronic structure selectively on sites with certain periodicities. Particularly interesting for transition-metal compounds is resonant scattering in the soft x-ray range with excitations into the d-states, which strongly determine the system properties. Apart from crystalline, magnetic or electronic superstructures, periodic structures with period lengths compatible with soft x-rays can be found also in nano-structured samples formed either artificially or by self organization. We report about scattering results from stepped SrTiO3. In this system, an intense scattering peak caused by the periodicity of the steps can be observed, which shows a resonance behavior distinctly different from the bulk signal, rather resembling the absorption signal one would expect to find from the surface or from step edges. We will discuss possible applications as a tool for surface sensitive absorption spectroscopy.
