Small cantilevers and an array detector for atomic force microscopy — •Tilman Schäffer — Physikalisches Institut, Universität Münster, 48149 Münster

Thermal noise of the sensing cantilever is a fundamental limit to the force resolution and scan speed in AFM. Small cantilevers with lengths down to 10 µm that have resonant frequencies in the MHz range push those limits and perform better than conventional cantilevers. Small cantilevers, however, require new AFMs with some fundamental design changes. Such an AFM for small cantilevers will be described. Furthermore, an optical detector consisting of a linear array of photodiode segments will be presented. This array detector dynamically adapts to the experimental conditions and achieves low noise, a large dynamic range and increased linearity, and is therefore well suited for the use with small cantilevers.
