Growth and electronic structure of Mg thin films on W(110) were studied by low energy electron and photoelectron diffraction and angle-resolved photoemission (PE). Layer-by-layer growth with hcp(0001) orientation of the surface was found. The lattice constant of the film correspond to the ones of bulk Mg. At photon energies between 20 and 50 eV PE spectra and Fermi surface mappings are dominated by emissions from surface states situated around the Γ, M, and K points of the surface Brillouin zone. Simulated PE spectra on the basis of LKKR-calculations are in good agreement with the experimental results. In addition to the surface effects quantum-well states are observed (up to 82 ML Mg) that shift with increasing thickness towards the band gap.
