Using the arc–based continuously working cluster ion source ACIS we have produced mass–filterd pure and alloy metal clusters in the size regime from 4 to 12 nm. The mass separation was carried out by 90 deflection in an electrostatic quadrupole and the clusters were soft–landed in UHV.

Ag clusters were deposited on W( 110) to suppress the particle mobility. The STM investigations were focussed onto the photon emission in inelastic tunneling processes. No light emission was found with tungsten tips. Using silver tips, increased light intensities were found above the clusters in comparison to the tungsten substrate.

Moreover, we have investigated the electronic and magnetic properties of Fe, Co and FeCo alloy particles using polarized synchrotron radiation at the storage ring BESSY. The chemical composition could be analyzed by means of photoabsorption spectroscopy. We were also able to investigate the magnetic properties element–specifically using the XMCD technique.
