Towards cryogenic pumping in the GSI heavy ion synchrotron SIS — •Udo Weinrich — GSI, Darmstadt UHV-Group
The accelerator complex at the GSI is undergoing an upgrade towards higher beam intensities. In the case of uranium beams the rest gas dominated lifetime has to be improved in the heavy ion synchrotron SIS. One way to proceed is to improve the pumping speed in the ring. Cryopumps seem to be the proper way to reduce the partial pressure for noble gases and hydrocarbons since they combine maximum pumping speed and best ultimate pressure with the possibility of real gas removal out of the system. The improvement potential with respect to the currently installed system containing titanium sublimation pumps, ion pumps and turbomolecular pumps was investigated and will be presented.
