Nonlinear optics with short laser pulses is a powerful method for the generation of coherent radiation at short wavelengths. High conversion efficiencies are possible if the phase matching problem can be solved, which requires a careful balancing of the geometrical and dispersive mismatch from atoms and electrons . We will present investigations on different processes like four wave difference frequency mixing and frequency tripling of 400 fs KrF laser pulses and high-order harmonic generation and parametric amplification with a 100 fs Ti:sapphire lasersystem. In case of the third harmonic from the KrF 248 nm laser radiation a conversion efficiency of 1.5 percent and an output energy of 100 µJ has recently been demonstrated .
