Rare gases have low melting entropy and form a No-dqsimple liquidNo-dq similar to metals and can therefore be used as model substances to simulate transparent metals. In these systems the solidification process can be studied in situ. Two new features have been introduced into the study of solidification by model experiments: 1.) the study of various morphologies and morphological transitions, and 2.) the possibility to reconstruct the shapes of transparent 3D objects. Morphology changes seem to lead to an explanation of grain refinement in metals. The determination of the 3D shape of objects formed during freezing provides for the first time the possibility to determine 3D shape parameters necessary to apply theories in casting processes.
