The structural biomaterial cellulose is a composite of nanocrystalline cellulose microfibrils embedded in a disordered matrix of cellulose and other polysaccharides. The viscoelastic mechanical properties reflect this morphology. In order to understand the structure–properties relation of cellulose fibres, we carried out tensile tests in situ while taking X–ray diffraction patterns using synchrotron radiation. Fibre bundles were investigated at HASYLAB, single fibres at ESRF. Two mechanisms on the microscopic scale could be identified: A rotation of the microfibrils and a stretching of the individual microfibrils.
