At beamline I411 of the storage ring MAX II in Lund (Sweden) a continuous wave laser facility to study laser excited atoms, molecules and surfaces with synchrotron radiation has been build. In this talk first results from this project are presented. Free sodium atoms have been prepared by a resistively heated oven. The outer 3s electron of the atoms has been excited into the 3p shell using 590 nm laser light. The properties of this excited state have been studied with 2p photoelectron spectroscopy. Both polarization effects and the influence of the aungular momentum coupling have been studied. Depending on the progress of the program new results from other alkaline metals will be presented as well.
