We investigate the combined effect of static octahedral potential and anisotropic interaction with intense, linearly polarized laser pulses on the rotational motion of linear molecules. Time–independent computations reveal a rich pattern of avoided crossings of energy levels corresponding to pendular states with different degree of alignment along the laser field polarization. Time–dependent computations put forward a scheme to manipulate the alignment by adiabatic and non–adiabatic passages through the avoided crossing regions, thus allowing for control over direction–dependent reaction mechanisms in solids.
