A setup for infrared experiments on biomolecules in the gas phase — •Undine Erlekam, Gert von Helden, and Gerard Meijer — Fritz Haber Institut Berlin Faradayweg 4-6 Berlin 14195

Experiments on isolated biological molecules in the gas phase can provide informtion on their intrinsic properties and such knowledge is a prerequisite for the understanding of their complex behavior in biological surroundings. We constructed a setup to study the infrared (IR) spectral properties of small to medium sized biological molecules using molecular beam/laser spectroscopic techniques. The setup contains a source where molecules are laser desorbed into an argon expansion in which they cool to low temperatures. They then travel downstream to be interrogated by pulsed IR and UV lasers. Mass selective ion dip detection allows for species and in some cases also conformer specific recording of IR spectra. First results on simple model systems will be discussed.
