The growth of Ru on Pt(111) at substrate temperatures in the range of 50-500C was studied by high resolution STM and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES). Ru deposition at temperatures up to 250C leads to the formation of triangular bilayer islands [1]. The lateral dimensions of these bilayer islands become more uniform with increasing substrate temperature, but show little dependence on evaporation rate and Ru coverage. At deposition temperatures of 300C or higher, in contrast the islands are only of monoatomic height. Based on STM-imaging with chemical contrast and AES analyses, this is associated with the onset of surface alloy formation. The influence of the different strengths of Pt-Pt, Pt-Ru, and Ru-Ru interactions as well as the role of lattice mismatch effects are discussed.
