Understanding fluid transport in natural porous media such as sandstones is important for many industrial and ecological applications. Permeability is widely used for characterization because it is one of the measured transport parameters that is strongly correlated to the microstructure. We present quantitative comparison of permeabilities estimated from the geometrical characterization of the microstructure within the framework of local porosity theory [1] with those obtained from large scale lattice Boltzmann simulations via Darcy’s law. With these two methods we analyze a laboratory scale continuum model of Fontainebleau sandstone [2] discretized at increasing resolutions ranging from 80 to 2.5 µm. Furthermore, many cubic subsamples with sidelength from 0.0128 to 1.024 cm are investigated to gain information about the representative elementary volume for this kind of sandstone. The results provide information for estimating representative elementary volume and resolutions for reliable permeability calculations.
