Observations of solar proton events observed using the EISCAT incoherent scatter radars — •Michael Rietveld — EISCAT Scientific Association, N-9027 Ramfjordbotn, Norway

Solar proton events (SPE) cause increased ionisation in the upper atmosphere resulting in polar cap radio wave absorption (PCA) events. The frequency of these will increase in the coming years as we approach the solar maximum in the next solar cycle so a review of previous observations is timely. I will show which measurements were made since the start of EISCAT observations in the early 1980s. The outstanding questions which remain to be answered, and the experimental possibilities that exist with the EISCAT facilities in northern scandinavia and Svalbard will be presented.
