The James Webb Space Telescope is an infrared optimized satellite. Its mid-infrared instrument (MIRI) covers the wavelength range from 5−28µ m and will provide imaging, medium resolution integral-field spectroscopy and low resolution (R=100) slit spectroscopy.

The low resolution spectroscopy mode (5µ m < λ < 10µ m) uses a double prism as dispersive element and aims at spectroscopy of extremely faint targets. Qualification of the sub-components is finished, with the flight model MIRI test campaign scheduled for mid 2009.
