Cosmic Ray Scattering and Acceleration: From the Solar Wind to Supernova Remnants — •Andreas Shalchi — Theoretische Physik IV, Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Bochum, Germany

A fundamental problem of science is the interaction between a plasma and charged particles described by a test particle theory. The theoretical description of these interaction processes is relevant for the physics of fusion devices as well as different astrophysical situations. An example for the latter case is the solar wind, a stream of a plasma ejected from the upper atmosphere of the Sun. Further examples are the interstallar medium or the intergalactic medium. The key parameter for describing plasma-particle interactions is the diffusion tensor. The knowledge of this tensor is relevant for investigating cosmic ray propagation as well as acceleration. Cosmic ray acceleration in different sources is the process which is responsible for the high particle energies which can be observed by the latest experiments such as the Pierre Auger observatory.
