Tungsten Transport in the Plasma Edge at ASDEX Upgrade — •Michael Arthur Janzer, Ralph Dux, Thomas Pütterich, Marco Sertoli, and ASDEX Upgrade Team — Max-Planck-Institut für Plasmaphysik, 85748 Garching

Tungsten, beryllium and carbon fibre components are the materials envisaged for the first wall in ITER. The ASDEX Upgrade tokamak with its full tungsten wall offers the opportunity to study the behavior of tungsten under reactor relevant conditions.

The tungsten erosion fluxes from all dominant sources have been determined by the S/XB method using visible light from WI at 400.9 nm. Comparing the main chamber sources (i.e. heat shield of the inner column and ICRH antenna limters) to the outer divertor source exhibits that the divertor provides by far the largest source of tungsten. However, the limiter source has the strongest influence on the tungsten concentration in the plasma.

For better understanding the influence of the eroded impurities on the impurity content of the confined plasma it is necessary to investigate the impurity transport not only in the scrape off layer, but also at the edge of the confined plasma, where the impurity density pedestal is determined by plasma transport. Therefore, faster cameras (frame rate: 1 kHz) were mounted on the SPRED (10-32 nm) and Grazing Incidence (2-50 nm) spectrometer. The higher temporal resolution allows for the exploration of impurity dynamics in the plasma edge induced by ELMs, laser-blow-offs and gas puffing under various plasma conditions. First results will be presented for silicon, argon and tungsten.
