Anionic metal clusters as probes for electron ensembles stored in a Penning trapNoelle Walsh1, Alexander Herlert2, Franklin Martinez1, Gerrit Marx1, and •Lutz Schweikhard11Inst. of Physics, University of Greifswald, Germany — 2CERN, Geneva, Switzerland

In an effort to extend the field of gas-phase metal clusters (small particles consisting of a few up to a few hundred atoms) a method to create poli-anionic species by electron attachment to monoanions stored in a Penning trap has been introduced. To this end the clusters are stored within an " electron bath" . On the other hand the conversion yield from singly-charged clusters to higher charge states can be used to characterize the simultaneously stored electron ensemble. The experiments include the determination of resonance frequencies of both the clusters and the electrons (indicating space-charge effects) as well as the relative intensities of the different charge states as a function of time. From this temporal behavior information about the equilibration of the motional modes of the electrons can be deduced.
