Effect of trapped electrons on soliton propagation in a plasma having a density gradient — •Farah Aziz, Lars Stollenwerk, and Ulrich Stroth — Institut für Plasmaforschung, Universität Stuttgart

Korteweg-deVries (KdV) equation with an additional term due to the density gradient is obtained using reductive perturbation technique in an unmagnetized plasma having a density gradient, finite temperature ions and two-temperature nonisothermal (trapped) electrons. This equation is solved to get the solitary wave solution using sine-cosine method. The phase velocity, soliton amplitude and width are examined under the effect of electron and ion temperatures and their concentrations. The effect of ion (electron) temperature is found to be more significant in the presence of larger (smaller) number of trapped electrons in the plasma.

A double-plasma device consists of two separate plasmas i.e. source and target plasma, in a common vacuum chamber, but separated from each other by a negatively biased grid. Using the particle-in-cell (PIC) simulation technique, the motion of a large number of charged particles in their self-consistent electric and magnetic fields is followed. PIC simulations of the target chamber of a double-plasma device are carried out, with the objective to study the above mentioned soliton dynamics.
