We investigate Josephson contacts made from crossed Nb and Fe strips. The weak link is created by the inverse proximity effect in the contact area between superconductor and ferromagnet. If we vary the width of the ferromagnetic strip and the ferromagnetic material, we observe a reduction of the critical current with increasing Fe strip width, which can be explained qualitatively by a reduced coupling between the superconducting reservoirs. A more detailed investigation has been performed on a sample with a 200 nm wide Fe strip and strong coupling between the superconducting leads. A quasiparticle current injected via the Fe strip has a strong impact on the critical current Ic. For comparison, samples with pure Pd instead of Fe were studied. This enables us to compare the effect of charge imbalance, spin injection and electron heating.
