Crystal growth of various ruthenates — •Stefan Kunkemöller1, Agung Nugroho2, and Markus Braden11II. Physikalisches Institut, Universität zu Köln — 2Institut Teknologi Bandung

Ruthenates of the Ruddlesdon-Popper series exhibit a variety of interesting phenomena ranging from unconventional superconductivity to orbitally polarized Mott insulators. Unfortunately the crystal growth of most of these ruthenates is extremely difficult partially due to the high evaporation of ruthenium; this strongly limits the research on these fascinating materials. We have started to grow single crystals of layered and perovskite ruthenates by the travelling floating-zone method using a Canon SC1-MDH mirror furnace. For the layered Ca2−xSrxRuO4 series we focused first on the range of concentration where recent My-SR experiments reveal spin-density wave ordering to occur at relatively high temperature and with a sizeable ordered moment. Good quality crystals of Ca1.5Sr0.5RuO4 can be obtained, when an excess of 15 percent of ruthenium is added to the initial preparation of the rod and when a high growth speed up to 40mm/h is used. Even slight modifications of the growing conditions result in large amounts of (Sr/Ca)RuO3 and (Sr/Ca)3Ru2O7 intergrowth phases. First attempts to grow perovskite and double-layered ruthenates will be discussed as well.
