Design and performance of a high-pressure liquid dielectric pulse forming line — •Rainer Bischoff — French-German Research Institute of Saint-Louis (ISL), 5 rue du General Cassagnou, 68301 Saint Louis, France

Liquid dielectrics as switching media are of special interest because of their higher breakdown field than compressed gases, especially in case of ultrafast ns-charging, better thermal management and removal of eroded electrode material while circulating through the switch.

The here presented pulse forming line consists of a high-pressure peaking switch with CFD-optimized electrode geometry in order to minimize the risk of a turbulent flow through the switch and an optional crowbar switch. Galden HT270, a perfluoro-polyether, was chosen as the liquid dielectric.

The measurements of the achievable breakdown field strength showed a significant dependency on the pressure. Record breakdown field strength of 14.3 MV/cm at a pressure of 3950 kPa is reported, an increase of 360% in comparison to the breakdown field strength of 3.8 MV/cm at atmospheric pressure. The typical peaking switch rise time was 220 ps. With the addition of the crowbar electrode, an ultra short monopolar output pulsed with a pulse width of 210 ps was achieved. The first results of a repetitive operation of the pulse forming line driven by an inductive Marx generator will be discussed.
