Momentum Phase Space Analysis with Charged Particle Diagnostic Devices — •Erik Ritter1 and Guenter Zschornack21DREEBIT GmbH, Dresden, Germany — 2TU Dresden, Dresden, Germany

The understanding of the phase space distribution of an ion beam is a first step to handle charged particle beams for example in the field of accelerator physics. We present the application of charged particle diagnostic devices in laboratory training at universities to analyze the momentum phase space of a charged particle beam.

A Pepper Pot Emittance Meter is used to measure the transversal position and momentum distribution of a charged particle beam. The Emittance Meter consists of a multi-hole aperture and a stack of micro-channel plates with a phosphor screen. The image of the beamlets is mirrored in a CCD camera and analyzed by a computer.

The longitudinal momentum is measured with a retarding field analyzer. The incoming ion beam is decelerated by a retarding grid set on high potential. The beam is detected in a faraday cup, while the potential on the grid is increased. The mean kinetic ion energy and the energy spread can be observed.

The results of both measurements describes the full momentum phase space of an ion beam. The measurements can be done separately for different sets of operation parameters of a certain beam line. Thus, students learn how ion optical elements work and what their effects on an ion beam are. This creates a deeper understanding of ion beam transportation and ion beam physics in general.
