X-ray Phase Contrast Mammography — •Konstantin Willer and Kai Scherer — Chair of Biomedical Physics TUM, Garching, Germany

In Soft-tissue imaging, conventional absorption-based images encounters the problem of a very low intrinsic contrast, due to a small change in the atomic number among the compounds. Within the diagnostic relevant energy regime, phase-contrast imaging modalities overcome this difficulty, by utilising the enhanced electron density contrast, which yields the potential to revolutionise early tumor diagnostics. A newly developed approach, utilising 3 gratings and a conventional X-ray tube, allows the simultaneous retrieval of Absorption (intrinsic Energy dissipation), Phase (electron density distribution) and Dark-Field (small angle scattering power) within a laboratory setup.

In our research we elucidate diagnostics benefits arising from phase-contrast imaging by measuring freshly dissected cancerous mastectomy specimen. Additionally we focus on mammographic inconspicuous findings, such as palpable tumors by measuring excised tumors. Here the dark-field signal proves to be of special importance, by revealing tiny calcifications. First studies on a compact setup of 1.5 meters length, 40 kVp and 70 mA have already been carried out.
