With the "Electron Capture Ho-163" (ECHo) experiment, the mass of the electron neutrino will be investigated in the sub-eV range by means of the analysis of the calorimetrically measured energy spectrum following the electron capture process of Ho-163. For this, radiochemically pure Ho-163 samples containing about 1E19 atoms are required. We present the production possibilities, the undesired impurities co-produced in the different production pathways, and their removal employing chemical (for separation of impurities of elements other than Ho) as well as physical (mainly to remove traces of Ho-166m) separation methods. This allows for the production of Ho-163 sources which are suitable for the colorimetric measurements of the electron capture spectrum as well as for the precise measurement of the Ho-163 mass by means of Penning traps to obtain a high-precision Q-value for the EC decay of Ho-163.
