Reconstruction of neutral pions in tau decays in the ATLAS detector — •Benedict Winter, Stephanie Yuen, William Davey, and Jochen Dingfelder — Physikalisches Institut Universität Bonn

Hadronic decays of tau leptons are intensively studied at the LHC, since they are important signatures e.g. of Higgs decays or Supersymmetry. Two-thirds of the hadronic tau decays involve neutral pions in the final state. The reconstruction of the individual pions and their 4-momenta can be utilized to improve the estimate of the visible tau 4-momentum by using energy flow methods and the tau identification by optimizing separately for the different decay modes. It also provides sensitivity to tau polarization and is thus useful for physics analysis to study the properties of e.g. the Higgs boson or potentially other new particles.

The latest developments of an algorithm that reconstructs neutral pions in tau decays in ATLAS are presented. It subtracts energy deposited by charged hadrons in the electromagnetic calorimeter and identifies neutral pions in the remaining energy distribution. The performance of the algorithm in simulated Z→ ττ decays and first results from a validation of the algorithm with data are presented.
