The reconstruction of hadronically decaying tau leptons plays an important role in the physics goals of the LHC. At ATLAS, the tau lepton is the only lepton for which polarization measurements are possible. A promising decay channel for these measurements is the τ→ ρ(π±π0τ decay mode, which suffers from background contributions from the τ→ a1±π0π0) ντ decay. An algorithm is proposed as an addition to the existing tau reconstruction software at ATLAS to distinguish between ρ and a1 decays by searching for individual photon showers in the high-granularity strip layer of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter. An additional application of the algorithm is proposed to identify π± energy deposits in the strip layer to better distinguish them from π0 energy deposits for use in the hadronic energy subtraction performed in the π0 reconstruction algorithm for tau decays.
