A Hybrid Photon Detector (HPD) for optical photon detection was developed by the Medipix2 collaboration together with Photonis USA. The HPD is comprised of a photocathode, a chevron stack of (two) micro-channel plates and a 2×2 array of Timepix readouts giving an active area of 2.8×2.8 cm2 (512×512 pixels). The signals produced by the MCP stack avalanches (∼105 electrons) are sampled by the 55 µm pixels of the input electrode matrix of the Timepix readout with a pitch of 55 micrometers. Each pixel is able to measure the number of events within a frame or the collected charge in the pixel of a single avalanche or a time-stamp with a time-resolution of about 10−20 ns. In this contribution we will present results of test measurements of the new detector with respect to time-resolution and imaging capabilities.
