FACT, reflector alignment and investigations on spatial and temporal resolution using ray tracing — •Sebastian Müller and Jan Freiwald for the FACT collaboration — TU Dortmund, Germany

Like most Imaging Air Cherenkov Telescopes, the First G-APD Cherenkov Telescope (FACT) features a multi mirror reflector. Multi mirror reflectors have several advantages compared to single mirror solutions e.g. making use of mass production techniques and providing fast apertures. However one disadvantage of multi mirror reflectors is the alignment of the single mirrors. Inspired by the reflector alignment system of the VERITAS group, an alignment framework for the FACT telescope was brought to live. Custom hardware for FACT has been developed to estimate mirror positions and orientations. Based on OpenCV, an alignment program was set up which was designed to support all kinds of mirror facet shapes and arbitrary telescope drive systems. For testing and development of the new alignment framework in Dortmund Germany, a 10th scale Mini FACT was built. An additional alignment approach was found on Mini FACT which can also be applied to FACT and other multi mirror telescopes. To find out which reflector configuration is best for our wishes in Cherenkov astronomy, a ray tracing investigation on spatial and temporal reflector resolution was performed. Ray tracing results and results of mirror alignment on Mini FACT will be presented.
