Inelastic cross section in proton-lead collisions with the CMS experiment — •Colin Baus, Melike Akbiyik, Sebastian Baur, Igor Katkov, Ralf Ulrich, and Hauke Wöhrmann — KIT, Karlsruhe, Germany

We present the results of the inelastic cross section measurement for proton-lead collisions recorded by the CMS experiment. The analysis is based on an event counting method by selecting inelastic events with the forward calorimeters of the CMS experiment. The luminosity is accurately determined by the van-der-Meer scan method with an uncertainty of 3.5%. This yields the proton-lead hadronic inelastic cross section of 2.06±0.08 b at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV.

With the Glauber model the cross section of proton-nucleus collisions can be calculated from the (measured) cross section of proton-proton collisions. This enables to verify the validity of the Glauber model at LHC energies. This test is highly important for simulations of ultra-high energy air showers.
