Preproduction model of the detection unit for the KM3NeT neutrino telescope — •Oleg Kalekin, Lew Classen, and Jonas Reubelt for the ANTARES-KM3NeT-Erlangen collaboration — ECAP, Uni Erlangen

KM3NeT is a future multi-cubic-kilometer neutrino telescope in the Mediterranean Sea. KM3NeT will consist of flexible, 700 m tall vertical structures holding 18 Digital Optical Modules (DOMs) each (detection unit, DU). 115 DUs with 90m horizontal spacing form a building block of the detector and six building blocks are foreseen in the full stage of expansion. In March 2013, a prototype KM3NeT DOM has been deployed with the instrumentation line of the ANTARES neutrino telescope. As a next step, a preproduction model of the telescope detection unit (PPM-DU) will be produced and deployed in the sea in 2014. The PPM-DU will contain three fully operational DOMs – pressure resistant glass spheres of 17-inch diameter, each encapsulating 31 photomultiplier tubes of 80 mm diameter, readout electronics and additional instrumentation for calibration purposes. One of the three DOMs of the PPM DU has been integrated at Erlangen Centre for Astroparticle Physics. This contribution describes the design and functionality of the KM3NeT DOM and DU and presents the current state of prototyping activities.
