Construction of new precision drift-tube chambers for the upgrade of the ATLAS muon spectrometer in 2014Oliver Kortner, Hubert Kroha, Philipp Schwegler, and •Federico Sforza — Max-Planch-Institut für Physik, München

The 2013-2014 shutdown of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN offers the opportunity to improve the performance of the ATLAS detector. In particular, the installation of additional muon tracking chambers allows for the improvement of muon momentum resolution.

For this purpose new precision muon drift-tube chambers with smaller tube diameter than the present Monitored Drift-Tube (MDT) chambers have been constructed.

Each chamber is composed of 624 aluminium tubes with a diameter of 15 mm. The position of the sense wires is known with a precision of better than 20 µm from measurements with a coordinate measuring machine and with cosmic ray muons tests.

The large number of components and the high quality requirements pose a challenge to the setup and operation of the chamber production line. An overview of the construction procedure is given together with a description of the test performed on individual drift tubes and on the completed chambers.
