DecaCube: Study for a high-energy extension of IceCube — •Christian Haack1, David Altmann2, Jan Auffenberg1, and Christopher Wiebusch1 for the IceCube collaboration — 1III. Physikalisches Institut, RWTH Aachen, D-52056 Aachen — 2Erlangen Centre for Astroparticle Physics, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg, D-91058 Erlangen, Germany

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is a 1 km3 large Cherenkov detector consisting of 86 strings with 60 photomultipliers each embedded into the Antarctic ice. Recently, the IceCube Collaboration has reported strong evidence for a high-energy astrophysical neutrino flux. The next logical step is to measure this signal with larger statistics and to identify the sources. One possibility is the extension of IceCube’s instrumented volume. In this talk we present a design study with about 100 additional strings, based on established technology, resulting in a volume of about 5 to 10 km3. We analyze the signal gain with respect to IceCube and background rejection capabilities for various detection channels.
