Search for singly produced vector-like quarks using substructure methods in ATLASElin Bergeaas Kuutmann, Heiko Lacker, and •Laura Rehnisch — Institut für Physik, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Vector-like quarks (VLQs) are predicted in various models beyond the Standard Model. Previous searches investigated pair production of VLQs and have thus set mass limits that are not easy to improve upon in the future, since the cross section decreases strongly with increasing VLQ mass. Therefore, a strategy for a search for singly produced down-type VLQs decaying to a W boson and a top quark, performed in ATLAS using the √s = 8 TeV data set collected in 2012, will be presented. Two models, a vector-like quark, B’, and a vector-like quark with additional anomalous chromomagnetic coupling, b*, are being investigated. Both heavy quarks have similar decay kinematics and can be reconstructed similarly, while categories of additional jets account for the different production modes (s-channel, t-channel). Final states with one lepton are considered. Due to the high mass of the VLQs, jets from hadronically decaying W bosons and top quarks are likely to be boosted, substructure techniques are thus used to increase the sensitivity. Studies to validate the search strategy will be shown.
