We study structural defects (kinks) which are formed during the transition from a laser cooled cloud of Mg-Ions to a Coulomb crystal, consisting of more than 50 ions in a linear radiofrequency trap [1]. Simulations reveal a strong anharmonicity of the kink’s internal mode of vibration, further enhanced bye the controlled extension into three dimensions. As a consequence, the periodic Peierls-Nabarro potential experienced by a discrete kink becomes a globally confining potential, capable of trapping defects at the center of the crystal.

The formation of kink configurations and the transformation of kinks between different structures in dependence on the trapping parameters are investigated. We present configurations of pairs of interacting kinks stable for long times [2], as well as a concept for fast detection and conditional manipulation.
