P2 - A fused silica Cherenkov detector for the high precision determination of the weak mixing angle — •Kathrin Schier1, Dominik Becker1, Sebastian Baunack1, Michael Gericke2, and Frank Maas1 for the P2 collaboration — 1Institut für Kernphysik Mainz — 2University of Manitoba

The weak mixing angle is a central parameter of the standard model and its high precision determination is tantamount to probing for new physics effects.

The P2 experiment at the MESA accelerator in Mainz will per- form such a measurement of the weak mixing angle via parity violating electron-proton scattering. We aim to determine sin 2 (Θ W) to a relative precision of 0.13%. Since the weak charge of the proton is small compared to its electric charge, the measurable asymmetry is only 33ppb, requiring a challenging measurement to a precision of only 0.44ppb. In order to achieve this precision we need to collect very high statistics and carefully minimize interfering effects like apparatus induced false asymmetries.

We present the status of the development of an integrating fused-silica Cherenkov detector, which is suitable for a high precision and high intensity experiment like P2. The contribution will focus on the investigation of the detector*s response to incoming signal and background particles determined by both MC simulations and by measurements at the MAMI facility in Mainz.
