Computer models of energy systems allow to explore possible configurations of future energy systems. The field of energy system models was previously only accessible to a few research groups with sufficient resources. Over the last decade the field has opened up significantly. It thus became accessible to a wider range of scientists and even the public. This creates learning opportunities regarding the challenges and consequences of various technologies in future energy systems. Using the openly accessible electricity system model for Europe ("PyPSA-Eur"), we explore a future scenario of transforming the German lignite mines in the region of Hambach into a large Pumped Hydro Storage facility. We discuss its impact on the German and European electricity system and further technology options for an electricity system based on high shares of renewable energies to achieve a 95% CO2 reduction target by 2050.
