Uniaxial strain combined with ARPES offers a relatively new route to studying the interplay between the lattice and electronic structure. The wide range of properties displayed by layered transition metal dichalcogenides makes them intriguing candidates for exploring this.

Here we present ARPES data revealing the influence of tensile strain on the electronic structure of IrTe2, which exhibits a complicated mixture of one dimensional charge ordered phases at low temperatures but very broad electronic bands [1]. The application of strain induces a single, long-range ordered phase, with clear quasi-1D features at the Fermi level and sharp bands over a wide binding energy range. By comparison with electronic structure calculations, we will discuss the mechanism of this strain-induced stabilization with reference to the redistribution of charge between Ir and Te bonds [2].
