One-dimensional periodic magnetic structures are interesting for magnetic force microscopy (MFM) because they can be used to calibrate the probes. The simplest of such structures is the Kittel domain structure, for which the magnetisation in the sample is alternating and perpendicular to the surface. It is established that the stray field of such a structure decays exponentially with distance and the decay length is z0 = P /2 π with period P. In accord with former objections, we demonstrate that the decay length shows significant deviations from the expectations. Additionally, we show how such structures can be exploited to calibrate MFM probes within the pseudo-pole model of MFM-tips.
