Data-driven models of frequency dynamics in islanded power-grids — •Ulrich Oberhofer and Benjamin Schäfer — Institute for Automation and Applied Informatics, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, Germany

The measures against climate change require a conversion of the energy system away from fossil to renewable energy. As a result, we face new challenges for electrical power systems, such as increasingly unpredictable power generation and rising grid load, which affect their stability and dynamical behaviour. As the grid frequency of a power grid is a measure of the balance of generation and load, it provides central observations for control and balancing. Especially smaller grids and mini-grids will play an important role in the energy supply in the future, therefore it is highly relevant to analyze their frequency dynamics.

We observe the frequency behaviour of islanded power grids and compare the results, here we use Fokker-Planck models in order to receive a stochastic differential equation and to estimate suitable control parameters, market impact and noise amplitude. With the obtained parameters we create a synthetic time series of the frequency dynamics and compare them to the original data.
