Status Report on the ECHo Experiment — •Raghav Pandey for the ECHo collaboration — Kirchhof Institute for Physics, INF 227, Heidelberg 69120

The analysis of the endpoint region of β-decay or electron capture decay spectra is a model independent method for the determination of the effective electron (anti-)neutrino mass. The ECHo collaboration aims to achieve this goal by preparing a high energy resolution and high statistics measurement of the electron capture spectrum in 163Ho. This experiment uses Metallic Magnetic Calorimeters enclosing samples of the 163Ho source. The first phase of the experiment — called ECHo-1k — has been completed with the publication of the best limit on the effective electron neutrino mass obtained from 163Ho, mνe < 15 eV (90% C.L.).

We present the results obtained in the ECHo-1k experiment and discuss the development of the next phase of ECHo, the ECHo-LE (Large Experiment). In ECHo-LE, 20000 MMC detectors will be read out using a microwave SQUID multiplexing scheme with the goal of acquiring 1013 events at a high energy resolution. The achievement of such a spectra allows for a sub-eV sensitivity on the effective electron neutrino mass.
