In recent years the phenomenon of stochastic resonance, i. e.  noise-enhanced synchronization driven by weak periodic signals, has attracted considerable attention. However, even though there has been much effort on the theoretical side, only a few experiments have been done so far.

Colloids as Brownian particles are a system very much suitable for stochastic resonance experiments because of the No-dqbuilt inNo-dq noise and our ability to precisely control its behaviour. A tool of choice for this kind of experiments is optical tweezers. Such an experiment has already been done in 1992 [1] but it didn’t show the characteristics of stochastic resonance correctly. In our experiment we propose to use fast optical tweezers based on an acousto-optic deflection system. This should enable us to reproduce and improve previous experiments as well as to perform new ones involving more complexly shaped potentials, modulation patterns, and many particles.
