Transitions from deterministic to stochastic diffusion — •Rainer Klages — Max-Planck-Institut für Physik komplexer Systeme, Nöthnitzer Str. 38, 01187 Dresden

The impact of time- [1] and space-dependent [2] disorder on deterministic diffusion in chaotic dynamical systems is studied. As a simple example, we consider a periodic array of scatterers defined by a simple chaotic map on the line. In computer simulations we find a crossover from deterministic to stochastic diffusion under variation of the perturbation strength related to different asymptotic laws for the diffusion coefficient. Typical signatures of this scenario are multiple suppression and enhancement of normal diffusion. These results are explained by simple theoretical approximations showing that the oscillations emerge as a direct consequence of the unperturbed diffusion coefficient, which is known to be a fractal function of a control parameter.
