Mechanics of wet granular matter — •Dimitrios Geromichalos, Mika Kohonen, Mario Scheel, and Stephan Herminghaus — Angewandte Physik; Uni Ulm; Albert-Einstein-Allee 11; 89069 Ulm

We conducted several experiments concerning mechanical properties of moist granular matter and compared them to the microscopic distribution of the liquid. This was observed by embedding the glass beads in a liquid which had a refractive index close to that of the glass beads, and using a fluorescent liquid as the No-dqwetting liquidNo-dq. We could find plausible microscopic explanations for the No-dqgetting softerNo-dq of the granular matter after adding a certain amount of liquid. Furthermore we were able to connect the dependence of the fluidization amplitude on the liquid content to the formation of liquid bridges.
