A colliding plasma experiment is set up to provide an intense UV/VUV-source as backlighter and as a reference for ion beam opacity experiments. The plasma collision will be caused by the acceleration of two plasma plumes, induced by two identical coaxial plasma accelerators (PAs). The acceleration of the plasma is based on the Lorentz force and can be described by the snowplow model (SPM). First experiments are performed using three parallel connected capacitors (4500 V, 3e-6 F) on either side. This leads to a stored energy of about 90 J. It is intended to conduct further experiments with stored energies up to 1 kJ and an applied voltage up to 15 kV. By increasing the stored energy stepwise one will reveal the behaviour of the emitted UV/VUV radiation depending on the stored energy. For the future, it is intended to develop this UV/VUV source by changing geometrical parameters like the radii, the length, the material and the shape of the accelerators. Furthermore the capacitors, the applied voltage, the gas type and the gas pressure will be varied to influence the discharge behaviour and to study the resulting effects on the UV/VUV emission.
