A novel type of discharge with a magnetic X-point is designed to investigate a possible new channel for negative hydrogen ion production. The production is expected to be in the volume by dissociative attachment to excited molecules formed on a dielectric surface. The magnetic X-point serves as a common magnetic filter for enhancement of the negative ion production. At the same time it influences also the RF power coupling to the plasma which is also important for the source performance.

In this study the RF field distribution is investigated and discussed. The results are obtained by using the radio frequency modulation spectroscopy. With this technique by registering the modulation within the RF cycle of the emitted light, information on the oscillation and drift velocities of the electrons is inferred. The obtained results allow the RF field coupling mechanism to be discussed and several hypothesizes are proposed.
