Investigation of the spatial, spectral and temporal Development of an intermittent negative DC Corona Discharge — •Torsten Gerling, René Bussiahn, Tomas Hoder, Eckhard Kindel, Klaus-Dieter Weltmann, and Ronny Brandenburg — Leibniz-Institut für Plasmaforschung und Technologie (INP Greifswald), 17489 Greifswald, Germany

A characterisation with respect towards temporal, spectral and spatial development of an intermittent negative DC corona discharge device will be presented. The source is driven with argon, flowing into ambient air. Typical current pulses of this device have a FWHM of 10 ns and amplitudes up to 1,5 A. Despite the self pulsing behaviour of the plasma, the discharge was investigated by means of cross correlation spectroscopy. A spatial resolution of 100 µ m, a spectral resolution of 0,1 nm and a temporal resolution of 70 ps were achieved. The discharge develops in five steps, with a cathode and anode directed ionisation front during the ignition phase. Starting nearly simultaneous, both ionisation fronts show velocities between 1 … 10 · 105 m/s. They initiate a glow phase, characterized by spectral emission of highly excited species (e.g. first negative system of nitrogen).
